Months ago, you might’ve seen the Rose city through our extensive roll of Live Blogging and whatnot. We’re finally back in action to show you some full fledged travel documentation, and I don’t mean Ron’s old passport (see Commercial #1). We’ve managed to condense what should have been a Part I and Part II of our two separate Portland trips into one long episode to add to our West coast travels.

6-hour long road trips packed in a sort-of-spacious Volvo can only breed a bunch of anxiety and a ton of hilarity. You know, we haven’t really globe-hopped off the North American continent just yet, but we always seem to make the absolute best out of our 3-day mini adventures. From attending Portland’s very first edition of TEDx to visiting/partying at super agency, Wieden+Kennedy to filming Tinker’s Anniversary with Nike just 2 short weeks ago, Portland’s been more than good to us. All in all it was more parts work, less parts play and that’s how we like it. We had great opportunities to shake hands with important cultural advancers, and of course we had to sneak in a little tomfoolery as well.

HueTV, Season 2 is a long ways from over. Rest assured we’ve been punching pavement on grander things that are still to come from us. Summer just started heating up..

In this little montage we filmed ourselves on the way to Tinker’s surprise at the Bossanova Ballroom. All six of us rocked the multicolor clown attire and looked like we were either ready to rob a bank or about to attend a bachelor party. I think you can tell though, we weren’t clownin’ around, we meant business.

Quick question, take a look in your closet, do you own a pair of Air Jordan’s, Air Max’s, Cross Trainer’s, or Huarache’s? If you do or you’ve always yearned for a pair then credit that desire to one man, visionary footwear guru, Tinker Hatfield. 30 years later and still at the top of his game, Tinker has cemented himself as the most iconic athletic footwear designer ever. NIKE thought what better way to celebrate his 30th anniversary with them than to ambush him with a surprise roast at the Bossanova Ballroom. The incredible folks at NIKE setup the gala in a venue just on the outskirts of downtown Portland, and our team was fortunate enough to capture the evening of Tinker being barraged by close family, friends and colleagues. It was all comedy and all in good fun at the Big Top. From us at The HUE, we just want to give huge thanks and congratulations on 30 years of sneaker domination! We might just need to make one of those t-shirts that say, “Tinker Changed My Life!”.

The Cheaper Show No. 10 was recently held on June 25th in the Mount Pleasant Community. If you’re still not familiar with the show, please educate yourself here before continuing. In brief, it is a not-for-profit organization who holds a one night art extravaganza which features 200 artists, roughly 400 pieces with all of the work priced at $200 each. It boasts a finely curated collection of artist submissions from around the globe where full proceeds on art sales go directly back into the artists’ pocket. This year’s show marked their 10th anniversary and is still considered the largest single-night cultural art exhibition in Western Canada.

I still remember when we rounded up the team for last year’s show at The Storyeum not knowing what to expect. We showed up late and didn’t have to wait in a line. As we got into the venue, I was blown away by the thousands of people mingling and viewing the hundreds of pieces on display. By the end of the night I was sold on The Cheaper Show and what it stood for. From that point on I made it a personal goal of mine to make it into the next show. I guess what they say about hard work and persistence is true. If you want anything bad enough you’ll work your ass off to get it. I did just that and made my way into this year’s show. I was given the opportunity to showcase my skills as a carpenter and submitted 3 pieces. Each piece was made out of concrete and served a specific purpose. Even though the chance to make some money is always nice, my mind was more focused on the chance to connect and be inspired by 199 other artists and their disciplines. What a great feeling it is to be around so many creative individuals that really care about their passions. At the end of the night I managed to sell 2 pieces, meet some incredible artists, made some great friends and added some new contacts to my arsenal. All in all I would say that my first large showcase was a huge success. Thanks again to those who supported and kept me going when I would hit those few bumps on the creative road.

Kudos to the entire Cheaper Show staff for continuing to up the ante every succeeding year. Sponsoring the show meant a great deal to us, but more importantly getting the chance to be involved with a like-minded collective who are doing it on a whole ‘nother level was the most rewarding. As the space came to life heading up to the show, we got to see some glimpses of just how much effort it takes to cultivate a community movement like this. We’re inspired to say the least, by the devotion of staff and volunteers alike. Now watch the fruits of their labour come into fruition with this, our latest Feature: The Cheaper Show No. 10 | The Wrap-Up.

So here’s a bit of backlog we haven’t been able to publish until now. All that work in Oregon a couple months ago comes to light today. To recap, we were commandeered by the TED organization to film and produce a few segment pieces for their inaugural conference in Portland entitled, Crossroads. The Gerding Theatre held a day long seminar featuring the city’s best and brightest cultural influencers from various walks of life. As we’ve stated before, the event was nothing short of spectacular; an educating experience on the arts, culture and life itself.

Have a look at the list of incredible speakers HERE. And without further delay we present to you the TEDtalks/event highlight reel. Footage courtesy of TheHUE & various TED videographers. Film edit courtesy of Mario & Marlon Soriano.
